PITTSBURG — The Fort Hays State University baseball team plated four runs in the pivotal fourth inning and tacked on three more runs in the sixth to pull away for a 7-4 victory over Pittsburg State University in the MIAA opener for both teams Friday (Feb. 28).
Pitt State (8-7, 0-1 MIAA) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on Dawson Pomeroy's first inning single, but the Gorillas couldn't hold off the FHSU (11-6, 1-0 MIAA) bats down the stretch.
The Tigers used a 12-hit attack to overtake the Gorillas. Jaxson Webb belted a two-run home run as part of FHSU's four-run fourth inning. Corbin Truslow, Jared Maneth and Tyler Olson joined Webb with two hits each in the contest.
Ryan Koval went 3-for-4 for the Gorillas. Greyson Pinkett homered and drove in a pair of runs for Pitt State.
The two teams will resume the three-game series with a 1 p.m. (CST) game Saturday (Feb. 29) at Al Ortolani Field.
