TOPEKA — The Pittsburg State University softball team split a pair of one-run games on day one action of the Washburn University Invitational Friday (Feb. 28).
The Gorillas dropped an 8-7 decision to Southwest Minnesota State University in the day's opening action, but Pitt State bounced back with a 2-1 victory over St. Cloud State University later in the day.
Madison Wegner delivered a two-run double in the Gorillas' victory against the Huskies. Shelby Smith (2-6) made those runs stand up. She scattered seven hits and registered six strikeouts in the complete-game win.
In the early game, the Mustangs used a four-run sixth inning to overcome a 7-4 deficit against Pitt State (6-14).
Kiley Hyslope had a pair of hits and scored twice for the Gorllas. Makayla Lamphier also knocked in a pair of runs.
Pitt State will return to action in the three-day tournament with a pair of games Saturday (Feb. 29) – at 8:30 a.m. against the University of Missouri-St. Louis and at 1 p.m. against the University of Minnesota Crookston.
