Gorillas, Warriors Split Twinbill Action Saturday


PITTSBURG -- The Pittsburg State University baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader against Winona State University Saturday (Feb. 8) at Al Ortolani Field The Gorillas scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth in the opener to rally for a 10-9 victory, before the Warriors overcame a 3-2 deficit in game two with a five-run seventh inning to eventually claim a 10-3 win.

Greyson Pinkett belted a three-run home run off WSU closer Nicholas Herold (0-1) to knot the score at 9-9 in the bottom of the ninth. Dawson Pomeroy followed with a bloop single to right center field and he took second base when centerfielder Nick Herbst misplayed the ball. Pomeroy advanced to third base on Clint Alen's ground out and scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch by WSU reliever Tanner Haessly.

Blain Ohlmeier went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Allen also knocked in a pair of runs. Nick Brown (1-0) won the game in relief, allowing one run in 3 1/3 innings of work.

In game two, Pitt State (2-5) took a 3-2 lead to the seventh inning, before WSU (2-1) struck for five runs in the frame to break the game open. David Henderson (0-1) suffered the loss in relief. Chandler Mauldin enjoyed a strong start on the mound. He limited the Warriors to two runs, one earned, in six innings of work and registered eight strikeouts.

Reece Garvie belted a two-run home run to stake the Gorillas to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Ohlmeier added a second-inning RBI for Pitt State.
