Gorillas Head to Tahlequah For MIAA Series vs NSU


PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University baseball team will travel to Tahlequah, Okla., Friday (Mar. 6) to open a three-game MIAA series against Northeastern State University. The Gorillas and RiverHawks will play 2 p.m. (CST) games Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Pitt State enters the weekend series with an 11-7 overall record and a 2-1 mark in MIAA play. The Gorillas scored a 10-7 non-conference win over William Jewell College Tuesday (Mar. 3). Pitt State opened MIAA play last weekend by taking two of three games from Fort Hays State University.

NSU is 8-8 overall and 2-1 in the MIAA. The RiverHawks picked up a 4-2 non-conference win over Northwestern Oklahoma State University Monday (Mar. 2). NSU opened conference action by taking two of three games from Northwest Missouri State University last week.

As a team, the Gorillas are batting .301 and scoring 7.6 runs per game. Senior designated hitter Reece Garvie leads the team with a .367 batting average. He has four doubles, three home runs and a team-leading 19 RBIs. He ranks second in the MIAA in RBIs and seventh in the league in batting average. Junior infielder Mason Hartman also is hitting. 357 with 16 runs scored. He ranks second in the MIAA in stolen bases (13). Freshman outfielder Ryan Koval also is batting .303 with six doubles, four home runs and 16 RBIs. He ranks fifth in the MIAA in both home runs and RBIs.

On the mound, the Gorillas sport a 5.96 ERA with 150 strikeouts in 154.0 innings pitched. Junior lefthanders Chandler Mauldin (2-2, 3.80 ERA) and Tanner Lane (2-1, 4.50) and junior righthander Zach Curry (1-1, 11.30 ERA) all have made four our more starts. Senior righthander Nick Brown (3-0, 2.76 ERA) has made seven relief appearances for Pitt State. Senior lefthander Colton Larkins (0-0, 4.15 ERA) has made a team-leading nine relief appearances. He has registered one save on the season.
