PITTSBURG — The Washburn University baseball team struck for four runs in the top of the ninth inning to break a 10-10 tie and eventually claim a 15-14 victory over Pittsburg State University in the opening game of a three-game MIAA series Sunday (Mar. 14).

Brett Ingram delivered a two-run double to start the Ichabods scoring in the pivotal final frame and WU (4-7, 4-3 MIAA) tacked on three more insurance runs.

The Gorillas tried to mount a rally in their half of the ninth with four runs of their own before WU's Trevor Marreel – the last of four Ichabods pitchers to throw in the ninth inning – recorded the final out to save the game for Casey Steward (1-0).

Blain Ohlmeier went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs to lead the Gorillas offensive attack. Greyson Pinkett homered, tripled and drove in three runs as well.

Tanner Lane (0-1) took the loss in relief for Pitt State (6-4, 3-4 MIAA). The Gorillas fell behind 8-1 after 3 ½ innings of play but battled back to knot the score at 10-10 on Ohlmeier's single in the bottom of the seventh.

The two squads will wrap up the two-day series with a 2 p.m. doubleheader Monday (Mar. 15) at Al Ortolani Field.
