Gorillas Prep for MIAA Road Series


PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University baseball team will travel to Maryville, Mo., to play a three-game MIAA weekend series against Northwest Missouri State University. The Gorillas and Bearcats will play a doubleheader Saturday (Mar. 20) starting at Noon (CDT) and wrap up the series with a Noon game Sunday (Mr. 21).
 
Pitt State is 7-5 overall and 4-5 in MIAA play on the season. The Gorillas dropped two of three games against Washburn University last weekend, but Pitt State closed out that series against the Ichabods with a 9-8 win Monday (Mar. 15).
 
Northwest Mo. St. is 6-6 overall and 5-4 in the MIAA. The Bearcats swept a competitive three-game series against Rogers State University last weekend at Maryville as NWMSU beat the Hillcats, 5-2, 5-2 and 2-1.

The Gorillas defeated the Bearcats, 20-2, at Al Ortolani Field in a non-conference match-up on Feb. 23, 2021. Pitt State has won six of the last seven meetings against NWMSU dating back to the 2018 season.
 
As a team, the Gorillas are batting .289 and scoring 9.3 runs per game this year.
 
Blain Ohlmeier leads the squad with a .359 batting average. He has scored 11 runs and driven in 12 more.
 
Ryan Koval is hitting .347 with five doubles and 15 RBIs, while Cruz Aranda is batting .340 with a team-leading 16 runs scored and eight stolen bases. He ranks second in the MIAA in both runs scored and stolen bases.
 
Garrett McGowan is hitting .271 with team highs of six home runs and 19 RBIs. He leads the MIAA in both categories.
 
On the mound, Pitt State pitchers carry a 6.17 team ERA. The Gorillas have registered 109 strikeouts in 105.0 innings of work.
 
David Henderson (3-0) leads the staff with a 2.89 ERA. He has allowed just 13 hits and four walks in 18.7 innings (0.91 WHIP) and fanned 17 batters. Nick Brown is 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA and two saves, while Peyton Ingalls 9s 2-0 with a 6.61 ERA.
