PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University baseball team will host Northeastern State University in a three-game MIAA series beginning Friday (Mar. 5) at Al Ortolani Field. The Gorillas and RiverHawks will meet at 4 p.m. (CST) for a single game Friday and then play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday (Mar. 6).
Pitt State is 6-1 overall and 2-1 in MIAA play heading into the series, while NSU is 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the MIAA. The Gorillas took two of three games from Fort Hays State University on the opening week of conference action last week. The RiverHawks took two of three games against Northwest Missouri State University last weekend.
The Gorillas are batting .307 as a team and scoring 11.0 runs per game. Pitt State hitters have belted 13 doubles and 12 home runs on the young season. Junior infielder Ryan Koval leads the squad with a .400 batting average. He has scored six runs, hit four doubles and driven in nine runs. Junior infielder Garrett McGowan is batting .381 with 11 runs scored, two doubles, five home runs and 14 RBIs.
Junior righthanders David Henderson (2-0, 2.00 ERA), Peyton Ingalls (2-0, 1.80 ERA) and Zach Curry (1-1, 7.88) have each started two games on the young season. The Gorillas have a 4.94 team ERA with pitchers compiling 54 strikeouts in 51.0 innings of work.
