PITTSBURG — The Northeastern State University baseball team swept an MIAA doubleheader from Pittsburg State University Saturday (Mar. 6) at Al Ortolani Field. The RiverHawks defeated the Gorillas, 16-8 and 3-0.
The Gorillas are now 6-3 on the season and 3-3 in MIAA action. The RiverHakws exit the series 5-2 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
NSU broke open a 7-6 game with four runs in the top of the seventh inning in game one. The RiverHawks tacked on three more runs in the eighths and two runs in the ninth to pull away from the Gorillas.
Adam Theis led the Gorillas at the plate going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs. He belted a three-run home run in the fouth inning that knotted the score at 5-5. Blain Ohlmeier also went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, while Cruz Aranda went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Justin Root (0-1) took the loss in relief, allowing one run in 1.0 inning of work.
In game two, NSU's Nic Swanson (2-0) and Dakodah Jones combined on a five hitter of the Gorillas.
The RiverHawks plated a run in the top of the first inning off Pitt State starter Zach Curry (1-2) and NSU added two more insurance runs in the third. Swanson made those runs stand up, allowing five hits and three walks over 7 1/3 innings while registering 10 strikeouts. Jones earned his first save of the season by recording the final five outs.
Ryan Koval collected three of Pitt State's hits, going 3-for-4 in the game, while Garret McGowan went 2-for-4 for the Gorillas.
Pitt State will return to action next weekend (Mar. 12-13) when the Gorillas host Washburn University in a three-game MIAA series.
