PITTSBURG – The Pittsburg State University softball team split a doubleheader with Northeaster State Saturday (Apr. 10). The Gorillas took game one,7-4 with the RiverHawks taking game two 9-7.
The Gorillas struggled early on at the plate with only two hits in the first four innings. In the same four innings the RiverHawks were able to plate two runs. With the fifth came the runs, Northeastern State was able to plate two in the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth the Gorillas had the bases loaded and center fielder Keelah Griffith at the plate. After a few pitches Griffith blasts a grand slam to right center field to tie the game at four.
In the sixth with the game still tied the Gorillas were able to plate three more runs thanks to hits from first baseman Kami Zimmerman and second baseman Kaity Kukowski. The Gorillas would hold off the RiverHawks in the seventh to win the game 7-4.
Senior Kaylee Burns was credited with the win moving her record to 7-8.
In game two the RiverHawks got started early taking a 9-2 lead heading into the third. With the Gorillas down seven the bats came alive. First with a. Single by Zimmerman to start thing off. Then a single by Lauren Florez and Madi Szymanski brought up Griffith with the bases loaded again. Whoever said lightning doesn't strike twice was wrong, because Griffith again blasts a grand slam to right center field to put the Gorillas within two 9-7.
The two grand slams gives Griffith a team leading five home runs. Griffith also notched eight RBIs giving her 24 on the season to lead the team.
The RiverHawks would hold off the Gorillas and go onto win the game 9-7. Senior Maddison Morris was given the loss moving her record to 1-7.
The Gorillas will start a six-game road trip Friday (Apr. 16) to take on Lincoln. First pitch with the Blue Tigers is set for 1 p.m. (CDT).
