Gorillas Fall Twice in Twinbill to Hornets Friday

PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Emporia State University Friday (May 7) at Al Ortolani Field. The Hornets defeated the Gorillas, 11-10, in game one and ESU beat Pitt State, 11-4, in the nightcap.

The victories allowed the Hornets (17-22, 13-19) to clinch the No. 8 seed for the upcoming MIAA Postseason Tournament, while the Gorillas (25-13, 20-12 MIAA), who saw their season-best seven-game winning streak snapped in Friday's opener, slipped into fourth place in the conference standings with the losses. The two squads will wrap up their three-game MIAA set with a 1 p.m. (CDT) game Saturday.

ESU broke open a 4-3 game with a six-run fifth inning in game one. Pitt State battled back in the contest and the Gorillas plated two runs in the bottom of the ninth and had the bases loaded before Greyson Pinkett flew out to deep center field to end the game.

David Henderson (7-3) took the loss on the mound, allowing seven runs, five earned, in 4.0 innings of work. Pinkett and Ryan Koval had three hits apiece to help pace the Pitt State offense. Brett Daley and Cruz Aranda each belted two-run home run in the contest, while Koval added a solo shot.

In game two, ESU starter Jared Kengott (3-6) held the Gorillas hitless through the first four innings. By then, the Hornets had tagged Pitt State starter Zach Curry (3-3) for seven runs and seven hits and built a commanding 7-0 lead.

Pinkett and Blain Ohlmeier had RBIs in the contest for the Gorillas.
