Gorillas Salvage Final Game of Series With 9-7 Win

PITTSBURG -- Caleb Carr belted a go-ahead home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to help lead the Pittsburg State University baseball team to a 9-7 victory over Emporia State University Saturday (May 8) at Al Ortolani Field.

The win helped the Gorillas (26-13, 21-12 MIAA) salvage the final game of a three-game series against the Hornets (17-23, 13-20 MIAA). Pitt State wrapped up the regular season in fourth place in the MIAA standings and now will await release of the 2021 MIAA Postseason Tournament bracket and pairings.

Carr's home run broke a 7-7 tie in the eighth and Cruz Aranda added a run scoring infield single.

Tanner Lane (2-1) recorded the final five outs to earn the victory. Carr led the Gorillas' 14-hit offensive attack by going 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and three RBIs. Garrett McGowan and Tyler Henry added two hits apiece, while Aranda and Aaron Gerdes each had two RBIs. Gerdes and Blain Ohlmeier each belted two-run home runs as part of Pitt State's five-run sixth inning.
