PITTSBURG – The Pittsburg State University volleyball team continued its dominance in John Lance Arena with two wins in day two of the Gorilla Classic. The Gorillas took down Northwestern Oklahoma in game one, 3-0. The team turned around for a come from behind win over Sioux Falls, 3-2.
In game one Pitt State got out to an early lead taking set one 26-24. The Gorillas would use the momentum to take the next two sets,25-13 and 25-18. Pitt State was lead by junior setter Brianna Richard who put up 43 assists and 12 digs. Senior middle hitter Hope White would tally 10 kills in the match.
The Gorillas would battle from behind in game two after dropping set one 25-23. Pitt State would battle to tie the game in set two 25-21. In set three the Gorillas would fall behind early 10-2 and ultimately drop the set to the Cougars 25-13.
The Gorillas stayed resilient and battled back in set four to take the set 25-16. Set five was a tale of two haves for the Gorillas.
The Cougars would battle early and earn the switch after an 8-3 start. After a timeout by the Gorillas, Pitt State would battle back to take a 9-8 lead. After a five point comeback the Gorillas wouldn't look back and rallied from five points down to take the set, 15-12.
In game two Richard would again put up monstrous numbers with 42 assists, seven digs and four kills. Senior outside hitter Meg Auten would put up 15 kills and 14 digs in the match.
The Gorillas will return to John Lance Arena for the final day of the Gorilla Classic to take on St. Mary's (Texas) at 3:00 p.m. (CDT).
