Pitt State Takes One of Two in Split Doubleheader

PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University softball team scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to salvage a split in a pair of games Saturday (Feb. 19) at the PSU Softball Complex. The Gorillas dropped a 9-0 decision to Winona State University early in the day then bounced back with an 8-7 victory over Drury University in the nightcap.

Pitt State (6-2) will face the same two squads again Sunday when the Gorillas and Warriors taking the field at 11 a.m. and Pitt State and Drury meeting at 3 p.m.

Kami Zimmerman singled home Keelah Griffith with the winning run in the nightcap against Drury. Paxtyn Hayes opened the seventh inning with a solo home run to trim the Panthers margin from 7-5 to 7-6. Gabby Schultz reached on an error and Griffith was hit by pitch. Madison Szymanski then followed with an RBI double to score Schultz before Zimmerman delivered the game-winning hit.

Zimmerman went 3-for-4 in the game, while Taylor Lambert, Griffith and Szymanski all had two hits each. Hannah Harrison (2-1) earned the win with 1.7 hitless innings of relief work.

In the early game, Winona's Liz Pautz tossed a two-hit shutout with 16 strikeouts against the Gorillas. The Warriors broke open a 2-0 game by plating four runs in the sixth and three more runs in the seventh to pull away.
