PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University softball team completed a 4-0 weekend by sweeping a pair of games against Minnesota State University and the University of Sioux Falls Sunday (Mar. 20).
The Gorillas opened the day with a 5-2 victory over the Mavericks and Pitt State capped the day with a 12-5 win against the Cougars. The wins helped the Gorillas improve to 21-8 on the season.
Against MSU, Pitt State broke open a scoreless game by scoring five runs in the bottom of the third inning. Taylor Lambert and Keelah Griffith had RBI doubles in the frame and Madison Szymanski swatted a two-run home run to cap the inning.
Abby Atkin (6-6) allowed two runs over 6.0 innings of work. He scattered six hits, walked two batters and registered six strikeouts. Taylor Compton got the final three outs for the Gorillas to earn her second save of the season.
In the nightcap against USF, the Gorillas built an 8-1 lead thanks to a six-run third inning. The Cougars trimmed the margin to 8-5 with four runs in the top of the fifth inning but Pitt State slammed the door on USF by plating four runs in the bottom of the frame.
Szymanski doubled, homered and drove in four runs in the contest. Griffith went 4-for-4 at the plate with a pair of RBI, while Josi Solano went 3-for-4 with two RBI and Lambert finished 3-for-4 with a homer and three runs scored.
Hannah Harrison improved to 11-2 on the season. She allowed five runs in 4.3 innings of work with five strikeouts. Madison Morris pitched 2.7 innings of two-hit relief to earn her first save of the year.
