PITTSBURG -- Austin Bonnel hit a pair of home runs, including a three-run blast in the fourth inning to help power the Pittsburg State University baseball team to a 12-7 victory over Missouri University of Science & Technology Wednesday (Apr. 27).
The Gorillas (27-17) pounded out 15 hits in the contest. Garrett McGowan and Kaden Fowler collected three hits apiece, while Mason Hartman, Caleb Carr, Bonnel and Hector Carrillo each had two hits.
Brett Daley singled home Carr with the go-ahead run in the fourth inning to give Pitt State a 3-2 lead and Bonnel followed with a three-run blast to make it a 6-2 contest.
The Gorillas stretched their lead to 10-2 in the sixth inning before the Miners (17-19) chipped away in the late goings.
Bennett Scherer (3-0) earned the win tossing 1.1 hitless innings of relief behind starter Zach Nagel. Jordan Mendenhall earned the save by recording the final out after MST had plated three runs in the ninth inning and had a pair of runners on base.
The Gorillas will close out the regular season slate when they travel to Topeka Friday (Apr. 29) to begin a three-game MIAA series against Washburn University.
