PITTSBURG -- Jordan Maxson belted three home runs and drove in a school record nine runs to help lead the Pittsburg State University baseball team to a 17-13 victory over Missouri Southern State University in the quarterfinals of the 2022 MIAA Baseball Championships Sunday (May 8).
The Gorillas (31-19) trailed 13-5 but scored the game's final 12 runs to take the best two of three game series against the Lions (29-23) and advance to the semifinals of the postseason tournament May 12-14 at Edmond, Okla.
Pitt State utilized a six-run seventh inning to turn a 13-6 deficit into a 13-12 game and the Gorillas pulled in front with a five-run eighth.
Maxson smacked a grand slam in the seventh to make it a 13-10 game and Conner Van Cleave followed with a solo shot in the frame.
Garrett McGowan and Maxson added a pair of two-run home runs in the eighth with McGowan providing the go-ahead shot against reliever Scott Duensing (0-4).
Jordan Mendenhall (4-1) pitched 4.2 scoreless innings of relief to win the game for the Gorillas. He scattered five hits and registered four strikeouts. Mendenhall was the fifth Pitt State reliever to enter the game.
