Gorillas Sweep Day One at the Alvy Early Classic

BENTONVILLE, Ark. - The Pittsburg State University softball team took two games Saturday (Feb. 11)  against Southeastern Oklahoma and Henderson State at the Alvy Early Classic in Bentonville, Arkansas. The Gorillas took the first contest against Southeastern Oklahoma by a score of 3-0 and the second contest against Henderson State by a score of 4-0. Game One: The Gorillas struck early in game one against the Savage Storm with Taylor Lambert roping a single and later scoring when Kianna Pellegrino reached base on an error. The Gorillas continued their attack in the second inning as Kadyn Trochim started the inning off with a single. Trochim scored the second run off an RBI Double from Lambert. Lambert came on for the third run thanks to an RBI single from Heather Arnett.
Lilli Weir earned the win in the circle by tossing a complete game four hitter. She registered four strikeouts in the contest. Game Two: The Gorillas started off game two strong with Arnett striking a double to right field, and scoring off the bat of Paxtyn Hayes. Trochim added a run scoring double that plated pinch runner Kori Stonestreet.
The Gorillas offensive attack would strike again in the bottom of the fourth with a leadoff home run from Gabby Schultz to give the Gorillas a 3-0 lead. The Gorillas would score their fourth run in the bottom of the fifth with Arnett stealing home on a walk from Trochim.
PItt State made those runs stand up thanks to a solid effort in the circle by Hannah Harrison. Harrison limited the Reddies to just three hits while fanning nine batters to earn the complete-game victory.
On the day, Lambert went 4-8 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Trochim went 3-4 with two RBI and one run scored. The Gorillas (3-4) are back in action Sunday (Feb.12) as they will finish their weekend at the Alvy Early Classic with a pair of starting at 11 a.m. against Southern Arkansas and wrapping up at 1:30 p.m. against Harding.
