PITTSBURG — Cade Clemons belted a two-run go-ahead home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to help propel the Pittsburg State University baseball team to a 6-5 victory over Metropolitan State University Denver Saturday (Feb. 18) at Al Ortolani Field.
The Gorillas notched their fifth straight win in improving to 7-2 on the season. Pitt State seek to continue its winning ways Sunday with a split doubleheader against the University of Sioux Falls at Noon (CST) and MSU Denver at 3:30 p.m.
The Gorillas scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning Saturday to take a 3-1 lead against the Roadrunners (8-2). Nixon Brannan had an RBI double in the frame and Clemons, who drove in four of Pitt State's six runs on the day, smacked a two-run triple.
MSU Denver got a run in the fourth and added solo home runs from Ross Smith and Cam Yuron to push in front, 4-3, in the top of the fifth inning.
Pitt State's Daegan Brady delivered a sacrifice fly to score Austin Warkins with the tying run in the bottom of the fifth, before Clemons delivered the go-ahead blast.
Tanner Leslie (2-0) allowed one run over 3.2 innings of relief work to pick up the win. Dawson Pomeroy picked up his first save of the season by registering the final three outs. Cason Long started the game, working 4.1 innings and recorded five strikeouts.
