PITTSBURG - The Pittsburg State University softball team won it's final two games of the weekend in the Pitt State Triangular at the Gene Bicknell sports complex.
The Gorillas defeated the Wildcats of Wayne State College 12-1 in five innings, then later defeated the Panthers of Drury University in six innnings.
Game One
The Gorillas struck early scoring four runs in the bottom of the first off of two, two-run home runs by Paxtyn Hayes and Kadyn Trochim. In the second inning, the Gorillas added to their lead with a two-run double off the bat of Paxtyn Hayes driving in Heather Arnett and Kianna Pellegrino. Hayes was later driven in off of an RBI single from Kylee Bohle. Sophia Driver came in to pinch run for Bohle to later be driven in on a one-run triple off of the bat from Kadyn Trochim. Trochim would score off of an RBI single from Gracie Sullivan to give the Gorillas a 9-0 lead. The Gorillas would put their three final runs up in the third off of a two-run single from Paxtyn Hayes. Hayes would score off of an RBI single from Kori Stonestreet. Hannah Harrison threw five innings in the circle for the Gorillas, striking out eight Wildcats to grab the win.
Game Two
The Gorillas started game two with another RBI single off of the bat of Paxtyn Hayes scoring Taylor Lambert to give the Gorillas an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. The Gorillas didn't score until the third inning when the Gorillas scored three runs off of an RBI single from Gabby Schultz driving in Taylor Lambert. Schultz would score off of an two-run blast off of the bat of Kianna Pellegrino. Drury would score a run in the top of the fourth off of a sac fly. The Gorillas would strike back in the bottom of the fourth with a grand slam off of the bat of Paxtyn Hayes. Kylee Bohle would later double in the inning bringing home Gabby Schultz to give the Gorillas a 9-1 lead. Drury would score in the top of the fifth off an RBI Single to decrease the lead to 9-2. The Gorillas would score to end the game in the bottom of the sixth with a walk-off two-run home run off of the bat of Kianna Pellegrino. Lilli Weir went four and a third striking out one batter to get the win for the Gorillas.
Paxtyn Hayes went 5-7 with 11 RBIs and two Home Runs on the day for the Gorillas. Kianna Pellegrino went 3-5 with four RBIs and two home runs on the afternoon for the Gorillas.
The Gorillas (7-6) will travel to Topeka next Friday (Feb.24) to participate in the Washburn Invitational next weekend.
