Conroe, Texas - The Pittsburg State University softball team lost a pair of games Saturday (Feb.4) against Texas A&M-International, 1-0, and St. Mary's, 5-3, at the D2 Spring Invitational.
Game One:
The Gorillas and Dustdevils battled for five scoreless innings. The Dustdevils scored in the bottom of the fifth to hold on and win 1-0. TAMUI's Erika Cortez tossed a complete game no hitter. She allowed one walk to Taylor Lambert, hit a batter (Kylee Bohle) and allowed and one batter (Josi Solano) to reach base on an error.
Game Two:
The Gorillas fell behind in the top of the first, 1-0, on a couple of Rattler hits. The Gorillas battled back and took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of a second thanks to a Keelah Griffifth walk and a two-run home run by Kianna Pellegrino. Pellegrino followed that up by driving in the third run for the Gorillas with a RBI single in the bottom of the third. The Rattlers added three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. Then the Rattlers added another run in the top of the sixth to hold on for the 5-3 win.
Kianna Pellegrino led the day at the plate for the Gorillas going 2-5 with three RBI and the first Gorilla longball of the season. Lilli Weir pitched six solid innings for the Gorillas.
The Gorillas are back in action Sunday (Feb. 5) as they take on Angelo State at 11 a.m. (CST). Pitt State will close out the weekend at the D2 Spring Invitational by taking on Texas Woman's at 1:15 p.m.
