Gorillas Sweep Double Header Against Lincoln

JEFFERSON CITY, MO - The Pittsburg State University softball team won both games in a conference double header against the Blue Tigers of Lincoln Monday (Mar.13) at Optimist Field at Lincoln University.

The Gorillas took game one in five innings 12-3 followed by game two in five innings 8-0. 

Game One
The Blue Tigers took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with an rbi single. The Gorillas got on the board in the top of the third with two, two-run doubles from Keelah Griffith and Gracie Sullivan to give the Gorillas a 4-1 lead. Then in the top of the fourth, the Gorilla bats warm up putting up eight runs in the inning. The action in the top of the fourth started with an rbi single from Gabby Schultz to give the Gorillas a 5-1 lead. On the next at-bat, Kylee Bohle hits a grand slam over the right field fence to give the Gorillas a 9-1 lead. Three batters later, Kadyn Trochim hit an rbi double to center field to score Griffith to extend the Gorilla lead to 10-1. Two Batters later, Taylor Lambert would hit an rbi double to score Trochim to make the score 11-1. Lambert would score the final run of the inning off of an rbi single from Heather Arnett to make it 12-1. The Blue Tigers would score two runs in the bottom of the fourth but the Gorillas would hold on to finish the game in the bottom of the fifth with a 12-3 final score. Lilli Weir threw 3.1 innings striking out six batters to get the win and improve her record to 8-4.

Game Two

The Gorillas kept the momentum from game one into the beginning of game two offensively. Lambert hitting a lead off triple in the top of the first. Lambert would score off of an rbi double off the bat of Paxtyn Hayes to give the Gorillas an early 1-0 lead. Hayes would score as Gabby Schultz reached and advanced to second on a fielding error to give the Gorillas a 2-0 lead. The Gorillas would score six runs in the top of the second. First run coming off of an rbi single to center field off the bat of Arnett. With the bases loaded, Hayes would hit the second Gorilla grand slam of the day over the center field fence to give the Gorillas a 7-0 lead. Later in the top half of the inning, Sullivan would walk in a run to score the final run of the game to give the Gorillas an 8-0 lead. Junior southpaw Hannah Harrison would go the distance pitching five shutout innings only giving up two hits and striking out two batters to improve her record to 7-3.

The Gorillas (16-8, 2-2 MIAA) will be back in action later this week as they host the MIAA/NSIC Conference Challenge Friday-Sunday (Mar.17-19) at the PSU Softball Field at the Gene Bicknell Complex.
