Pitt State, Winona State Split Twinbill

PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader against Winona State University Friday (Mar. 17) at the PSU Softball Complex. The Gorillas posted a 3-0 win in game one and the Warriors came away with a 4-1 victory in the nightcap.

Game One

Junior Hannah Harrison took a perfect game into the seventh inning before settling for a complete-game one-hitter. Harrison (8-3) retired the first 19 batters she faced before allowing an infield hit to Carly Engelhardt with one out in the seventh. The Moore, Okla., native recovered and then induced a game-ending double play.

Paxtyn Hayes smacked an RBI double and Garry Schultz added a run-scoring triple to stake the Gorillas to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Kiarra Pellegrino knocked in Schultz, who went 2-for-3 in the game, with an insurance run in the fourth inning.

Game Two

The Gorillas jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning thanks to an RBI single by Schultz, but the Warriors rallied with a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth to take control.

WSU's Abby Smith improved to 8-2 on the season with a complete-game pitching performance. Lilli Weir () took the loss for the Gorillas.

Pitt State (17-9, 2-2 MIAA) will return to action next Friday (Mar. 24) when the Gorillas host MIAA rival Rogers State University in a 3 p.m. (CDT) doubleheader.
