PITTSBURG — Daegan Brady's sacrifice fly scored Austin Warkins with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning to help lift the Pittsburg State University baseball team to a 9-8 victory over Emporia State University Tuesday (Mar. 14).
Â
The Gorillas (15-7, 7-3 MIAA) trailed, 8-7, entering the eighth frame, but Karson Coffee and Warkins drew back-to-back walks against ESU's Carson Cornelius (0-2). Nixon Brannan then doubled off Hornets reliever Ian Lanik to plate Coffee and set up Brady's run-scoring fly out.
Â
Dawson Pomeroy got the final three outs to pick up his third save of the season. Pomeroy allowed a hit and a walk before inducing Palmer Hutchinson into a grounder to end the game.
Â
Warkins went 3-for-3 with and RBI and two runs scored. Brannan and Brady had two hits apiece, while Trey McClelland belted a two-run homer run.
Â
Parker Weddle (1-0), the fourth of five Pitt State relievers earned the win, working 1.1 innings of hitless relief.
Â
The Gorillas will return to action Friday (Mar. 16) when they open a three-game MIAA series against Northeastern State University at Al Ortolani Field.
