PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University baseball team built a 9-0 lead and held on in the late innings for an 11-7 victory over Northeastern State University in the MIAA series opener between the Gorillas and RiverHawks Friday (Mar. 17).

Zac Shoemaker (6-0) remained unbeaten on the season for Pitt State (16-7, 8-3 MIAA). He scattered seven hits over 6.0 innings of work, registering 12 of his 18 outs by strikeout.

Nixon Brannan and Karson Coffee had two RBI apiece, while Brannan, Austin Warkins, Ryan Koval and Brett Daley each collected two hits. Daley doubled and scored three runs. Brevon Lee, Warkins and Brannan all scored twice.

NSU (10-12, 4-7 MIAA) plated three runs in the seventh and four more runs in the eighth to trim the margin to 9-7, before the Gorillas plated two runs in the bottom of the eighth to regain separation.

Dawson Pomeroy, the last of four relievers, recorded the final three outs for the Gorillas.

Pitt State and NSU will return to Al Ortolani Field Sunday (Mar. 19) for a Noon (CDT) doubleheader to complete the series. Saturday's contest was pushed back a day due to an unfavorable weather forecast.
