Gorillas Open Series With Sweep Friday

HAYS, Kan. — The Pittsburg State University baseball team swept a pair of games from Fort Hays State University Friday (Mar. 24) at Larks Park.

The Gorillas posted a 14-1 victory over the Tigers in game one. Then, following a two-hour weather delay, the two squads resumed action with Pitt State taking a 9-5 win in game two.

Zac Shoemaker improved to 7-0 on the season in game one. Shoemaker limited the Tigers to five hits in 6.2 innings of work, while registering 10 strikeouts among his 20 outs. Harold Baez recorded the final four outs.

The Gorillas smacked four home runs in the contest. Trey McClelland went 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBI, while Nixon Brannan doubled, homered and drove in three runs. Jake Grauberger and Brett Daley also hit round trippers.

In game two, the Gorillas broke open a 5-4 game with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings as well as a two-run eighth.

Cade Clemons went 3-for-5 with a homer and four RBI, while Brannon doubled, homered and drove in three runs. He came up a triple short of hitting for the cycle while going 4-for-5 at the plate. Daley also smacked his second home run of the day in the game.

Parker Tennill (2-1) worked 2.1 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win behind starter Tanner Leslie. Relievers Andrew Wisner, Parker Weddle and Dawson Pomeroy combined to hold FHSU to one hit over the final three innings of play.

Pitt State and FHSU will wrap up the series with a Noon (CDT) game Saturday.
