PITTSBURG- The Pittsburg State University softball team completed the weekend sweep Sunday (Mar. 26) with a a double header sweep against the Riverhawks of Northeastern State by scores of 7-0 and 6-3 at the Gene Bicknell Complex.
Game One
The Gorillas relied on the arm of Hannah Harrison as she threw a complete game shut out. Harrison Struck out 10 Riverhawk batters in her outing. The Gorillas got on the scoreboard early as Paxtyn Hayes hit an rbi single to give the Gorillas a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Keelah Griffith hit another rbi single to extend the lead to 2-0. The Gorillas would score two more runs in the fourth on an rbi off of two fielder's choices, one from Kianna Pellegrino and the other from Heather Arnett to extend the Gorillas lead to 4-0. Later in the inning the Gorillas would score on a double steal as Arnett stole second and Pellegrino would steal home on the throw. In the bottom of the fifth, the Gorillas would score off of an rbi single from Gabby Schultz to make it 6-0. In the bottom of the sixth, the Gorillas would score a the final run off of an rbi single from Arnett to make it 7-0.
Game Two
The Riverhawks got on the scoreboard early in the first with an rbi single from Chloe Bohuslavicky to give the Riverhawks a 1-0 lead. Later that inning, the Riverhawks would score another run with an rbi sac fly from Addy Wolfe. The Gorillas would respond right away in the bottom half starting with an rbi single from Arnett to cut the lead in half. Later that inning, Hayes would tie it up with an rbi triple off the right field wall. The next at-bat, Kylee Bohle would hit an rbi single to give the Gorillas a 3-2 lead. Later that inning, Griffith would hit an rbi single to give the Gorillas a 4-2 lead. The Gorillas would continue to add on the lead in the second with an two run single from Schultz to extend the lead to 6-2. Both teams wouldn't score until the top of the fourth when Savannah Evans would hit a solo home run to score the final run of the game to make it 6-3. Haidyn Berry would gain the win for the Gorillas pitching four and a third inning. Bree Sexton would get the save with a punch out and not allowing a hit through her two and two third outing.
The Gorillas (21-9, 6-2 MIAA) will be on the road next Friday (Mar. 31) as they will travel to Hays, Kan. to take on the Lady Tigers of Fort Hays State in a double header starting at 1:00 p.m.
