EDMOND, Okla. — The Pittsburg State University baseball team scored 11 runs in the first three innings of play and rode that early momentum to a 16-12 victory over the University of Central Oklahoma in the MIAA series opener Friday (Mar. 31).

Nixon Brannan and Cade Clemons each homered for the Gorillas (22-9, 14-4 MIAA), who pounded out 14 hits in the contest. Â Brannan doubled, homered and drove in three runs, while Joe Hamilton went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI. Hamilton finished a home run short of hitting for the cycle in the game with two singles, a double and a triple.

Maverick Hanna (1-0) earned the win on the mound. He allowed two runs in 2.0 innings of relief. Parker Weddle recorded the final six outs to earn his second save of the season.

The Gorillas and Bronchos (21-10, 10-8 MIAA) will resume their series with a 3 p.m. (CDT) game Saturday at Wendell Simmons Field.
