ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- Ryan Koval singled home Nixon Brannan with the go-ahead run in the top of the 13th inning to help lift the Pittsburg State University baseball team to a 4-3 win over Missouri Western State University Sunday (Mar. 5).
The Gorillas (11-6, 3-2 MIAA) plated two runs in the top of the eighth inning to knot the score at 3-3. Pitt State pitchers held the Griffs (3-9, 0-5 MIAA) scoreless over the final 9.0 innings of play after MWSU plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead.
Paul Panduro registered the final two outs to earn the save. He entered the game with one out in the 13th and Griffs runners on second and third base. Panduro induced a grounder that shortstop Cade Clemons snared and then threw home in time to record an out on MWSU's Travis Wiese who broke from third base in an attempt to score. Panduro then got Jackson Bryant to fly out to end the game.
Andrew Wisner (1-0) earned the win, working 1.1 innings of relief. Harold Baez started the game, allowing three runs on five hits in 3.1 innings of action. Tanner Leslie worked 5.0 innings behind Baez, limiting MWSU to three hits and fanning five batters. Dawson Pomeroy also tossed 2.2 innings of one-hit relief before Wisner entered the game in the 12th.
Brannan went 2-for-5 at the plate. Carson Koffee smacked a triple and drove in a run. Joe Hamilton also had a pinch-hit RBI in the eighth.
Pitt State and Western will wrap up the three-game MIAA series with a final game at Noon (CST) Monday (Mar. 6) at the MWSU Baseball Field.
