PITTSBURG - The Pittsburg State University softball team swept the Rockhurst University softball team in two games Sunday (Mar.5), to finished the weekend with two wins, finishing the MIAA/GLVC crossover with a 4-0 record at the PSU Softball Complex.
The Gorillas won the first game 11-6 then followed it up with an 8-6 win under the lights.
Game One
The Hawks struck first in the top of the second with a four run inning off of back-to-back home runs and an rbi triple with a run scoring off of an error on that triple. The Gorillas would add a run in the bottom half of the inning with a rbi single from Gracie Sullivan. The Hawks would add another run in the top of the third with an rbi single to extend the lead to 5-1. The Gorillas would battle back in the bottom of the third with an rbi single from Heather Arnett, scoring Keelah Griffith on an throwing error. On the next at-bat, Paxtyn Hayes would hit a three run home run to left center to tie the game up at five. The Hawks would regain the lead in the top of the fourth with an rbi single. The Gorillas would take advantage on a few errors with Griffith driving in a run while reaching on an error. Taylor Lambert would score Griffith on an rbi single through the right side of the infield. Lambert would later score in the inning off of an rbi single from Hayes to give the gorillas an 8-6 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, the Gorillas would extend their lead with an rbi sac fly from Kadyn Trochim to score Kyndall Davis. Later in the inning, Kianna Pellegrino would score on a wild pitch to give the Gorillas a 10-6 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Gabby Schultz would hit a solo home run over the center field wall to give their final run of the game to win 11-6. Lilli Weir would go six innings in the win.
Game TwoÂ
The Gorillas got on the board first in game two with a two-run double off of the bat of Griffith to give the Gorillas a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. The Hawks would score in the top of the third with a solo home run to cut the Gorilla lead to 2-1. In the bottom of the third, Shultz would add her second home run of the day, hitting another home run to center field to extend the Gorilla lead to 3-1. The Hawks would tie the game up at three with a two-run home run in the top of the fourth. The Gorillas would add four runs in the bottom of the fourth, with an rbi single from Schultz. Later in the inning, Sullivan would draw a walk to score a run to extend the lead to 5-3. Then with the bases loaded, Kylee Bohle would hit a two-run double down the left field line to extend the Gorilla lead to four runs. The Hawks would score three runs in the top of the sixth to cut the Gorilla lead to one. In the bottom of the sixth, Bohle would drive in an insurance run with an rbi single to give the Gorillas an 8-6 lead. Haidyn Berry would come in relief in the sixth inning and shut the door and give the Gorillas an 8-6 win. Freshman Madeline McCall pitched five innings, striking out eight hitters to get her first career win.
The Gorillas (14-6) will start MIAA play next friday, as they travel to Jefferson City, Mo. to take on the Blue Tigers of Lincoln. The double header will start at 1:00 p.m.
