Gorillas, Lopers Trade Victories Sunday

KEARNEY, Neb. ‒ The Pittsburg State University softball team split a doubleheader with the the University of Nebraska-Kearney Sunday (Apr.2) at Patriot Park. The Gorillas posted an 8-2 win in the opener before falling, 2-0, in the nightcap.

Game One
Sophia Driver sparked the Gorillas with a pair of hits, including a double, and three RBI as Pitt State opened the day with an 8-2 win. Driver's three-run double staked the Gorillas to a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning and Pitt State tacked on a pair of runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth frame. Hannah Harrison (11-4) earned the win with a complete-game pitching effort. She scattered seven hits and registered a pair of strikeouts. Driver and Heather Arnett had two hits apiece in the contest, while Taylor Lambert scored a pair of runs.

Game Two
Sydney Thomason held Pitt State at bay for seven innings and UNK plated single runs in the first and third frames to give Thomason all the offensive support she needed. The Gorillas had base runners in every inning, except the first frame, but Pitt State failed to push across a run. Paxtyn Hayes doubled and seven different Gorillas had hits in the contest. Bree Sexton (1-3) took the hard-luck loss for Pitt State.

The Gorillas (22-12, 7-5 MIAA) will return to the road next Saturday (Apr. 8) when they travel to Joplin, Mo., for an MIAA twinbill against Missouri Southern State University.
