PITTSBURG -- The Newman University baseball team scored seven unanswered runs to rally from an early 4-0 deficit and post a 7-6 victory over Pittsburg State University Friday (Apr. 21) at Al Ortolani Field.
The Jets (20-25, 12-16 MIAA) utilized a four-run fifth inning to push in front, 5-4, against the Gorillas (29-14, 19-9 MIAA). Newman added a pair of crucial insurance runs on an eighth inning home run by Jenner Steele to build a 7-4 cushion.
Pitt State plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth thanks to a solo home run by Cade Clemons and Daegan Brady's sacrifice fly, but Jets reliever Andrew Prieve earned his second save of the season by striking out Austin Warkins with two on and two out to end the game.
Karson Coffee swatted a pair of homers and drove in three runs for the Gorillas. Warkins collected three hits in the contest. Nixon Brannan claimed sole possession of the school record for consecutive game hitting streak with his third inning infield hit. He now has hit safely in 22 straight contests. Zac Shoemaker (8-1) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing five runs, four earned, in 6.0 innings of work.
The Gorillas and Jets will resume the three-game series with a 1 p.m. game Saturday (Apr. 22).
