PITTSBURG- The Pittsburg State University softball team honored their 2023 senior class Saturday (Apr.22) as they split a double header with the Bearcats of Northwest Missouri at the PSU Softball Complex.
The Bearcats took game one by a score of 5-2 while the Gorillas bounced back and took game two 7-4.
Game OneÂ
The Bearcats took advantage of a three run top of the fifth inning to beat the Gorillas 5-2 in game one. In the top of the third, the Bearcats scored the first run of the game with a bases loaded walk. In the top of the fourth, Madison Friest would hit an rbi single to extend the Bearcat lead to 2-0. The Bearcats would put up three runs in the top of the fifth starting with a rbi sacrifice fly from Olivia Daugherty to make it 3-0. On the next at-bat, Abby Nolte would hit a two-run home run to give the Bearcats a 5-0 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, the Gorillas would score their two runs on a two-run single off the bat of Gracie Sullivan to make it 5-2. But in the end, the Bearcats would hold on to win game one 5-2
Game Two
In Game two, the Gorillas would take advantage on the basepaths to win 7-4. In the bottom of the first, Paxtyn Hayes would hit a two-run home run over the right field wall to give the Gorillas a 2-0 lead. The Gorillas would score two runs in the bottom of the fifth, as Heather Arnett, and Taylor Lambert would score on wild pitches to extend the Gorilla lead to 4-0. The Bearcats would rally back in the top of the sixth to tie the game up at four with an rbi single from Omara Love, two more runs would score on an error to make it a 4-3 Gorilla lead. On the next at-bat, Skyler Pieper would hit an rbi sacrifice fly to tie the game up at four. The Gorillas would re-gain the lead with as Heather Arnett would rip a single into left to move Kyndall Davis to third. Davis would score on a throw going wide as Arnett would reach to second after getting caught in a rundown. Two batters later, Kianna Pellegrino would rip a two-run double to right center field to make the score 7-4. Freshman Pitcher Madeline McCall would get her second career win in relief. Lambert would go 3-4 in game two for the Gorillas.
The Gorillas (26-18, 11-11 MIAA) will hit the road next weekend for the final weekend of the regular season as they will travel to Edmond, Okla., Friday (Apr.28) as they will take on the Bronchos of Central Oklahoma. Then on Saturday, (Apr. 29) the Gorillas will go to Wichita, Kan., to take on the Jets of Newman University.Â
