HAYS, Kan. — The Pittsburg State University football team scored the game's final 30 points to post a 40-14 road win over Fort Hays State University Thursday (Sept. 7) at Lewis Field Stadium.

The Gorillas (2-0, 2-0 MIAA) trailed 14-10 with 1:15 to play in the second quarter, but Pitt State's Austin Schmitt booted a field goal with six seconds to play in the first half to cap a quick scoring drive.

The Gorillas then pitched a second half shutout against the Tigers (1-1, 1-1 MIAA) and pulled away thanks to a 20-point third quarter outburst.

Quarterback Chad Dodson Jr. completed 26 of 36 passes for 239 yards and two scores, including a 24-yard go-ahead touchdown pass to tight end Devon Garrison midway through the third quarter.

The Gorillas added touchdown runs of eight yards by wide receiver Greyson Holbert and six yards by running back Cleo Chandler Jr. in the decisive third quarter. Schmitt added a 24-yard fourth quarter field goal and backup QB Ty Pennington tossed a 15-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Kam Gillispie.

Pennington completed three of four passes for 44 yards in the game and added a team-leading 43 rushing yards on five attempts. Running back Noah Hernandez added eight carries for 41 yards.

Running back Antwan Squire rushed seven times for 40 yards and caught three passes for 50 yards. Garrison led all receivers with five grabs for 90 yards.

Defensively, the Gorillas limited FHSU to just one first down and 35 total yards of offense in the second half. The Tigers mustered just 212 total yards in the game (47 rushing yards).

Linebacker Alex Gaskill made a team-leading six tackles, while safety Jordan Rogers posted two stops and an interception in the contest.

The Gorillas will travel to Warrensburg, Mo., to meet the University of Central Missouri next Saturday (Sept. 16) at 1 p.m. (CDT).
