EDMOND, Okla. -- The Pittsburg State University baseball team dropped a 17-5 decision to Oklahoma Baptist University in the Gorillas season opener Thursday (Feb. 1) in the Sixth Annual UCO First Pitch Classic.
The Bison (1-0) plated six runs in the third inning to erase an early 3-1 deficit and OBU added five more runs in the fourth frame to break the game open.
Alex Schroeder homered twice and drove in five runs while going 3-for-3 at the plate to pace the Bison. Isiah Lissade also collected three hits, scored three times, homered an drove in four runs.
Karson Coffee smacked a home run and posted two of Pitt State's 10 hits in the contest. Joe Hamilton and Jake Grauberger each had doubles.
Brek Galbreath (1-0) earned the win for OBU, scattering seven hits in 5.0 innings of work. William Ellis worked the final three innings and registered five strikeouts to pick up a save. Pitt State's Brady Pacha (0-1) allowed seven runs, six earned, in 2.1 innings of work. Five relievers - Cole Askew, Cadyn Castallenos, Landon Reith, Parker Tennill and Zach Curry - pitched behind Pacha.
The Gorillas will return to the diamond for day two action of the four-day tournament at 12:30 p.m. (CST) Friday against East Central (Okla.) University.
