TOPEKA, Kan. - The 18th-ranked Pittsburg State softball program finished the second day of the Washburn Invitational (Feb. 24) with run-rule victories over St. Cloud State and Sioux Falls at the Lake Shawnee Softball Complex Field Two.
In game one, Pittsburg State (12-2) won 9-1 in six innings against SCSU (8-3) behind multi-hit games from Heather Arnett (Pittsburg, Kan.), Hannah Burnett (Independence, Kan.) and Maddie Fernandez (San Antonio, Texas). Fernandez and Paxtyn Hayes (Greenwood, Ark.) hit their first home runs of the season and Ava Laurent (Grand Island, Neb.) picked up her fourth win of the season, finishing with seven strikeouts in six innings.
The Gorillas beat Sioux Falls (6-6) 8-0 in five innings to end the day, Kiana Pogroszewski (Ephraim, Utah) picked up her fifth win of the season, striking out a season-high eight batters. Fernandez hit her second home run of the day and finished with three RBI, while Arnett, Courtney Storey (Rogers, Ark.) and Amaya Snyder (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) each had an RBI.
Up next for Pittsburg State will be the final day of the Washburn Invitational at the Lake Shawnee Softball Complex against Rockhurst (Noon) and Minnesota State - Mankato (4:00 p.m.) from Field Two.
Note: Heather Arnett moved past Gregan Ketcham (2003-06) for fifth in program history for career steals with 43.
