Box Score TOPEKA — The Washburn University baseball team staged an eight-run rally to force extra innings and eventually claim an improbable 10-9 victory over Pittsburg State University Sunday (Feb. 25) at Falley Field.
The Gorillas (10-5, 1-2 MIAA) belted seven home runs in the contest against the Ichabods (6-7, 2-1 MIAA), but Pitt State relievers couldn't hold off WU in the late innings. The Ichabods entered the bottom of the eighth inning trailing 9-1 but WU got five runs in the eighth and three more in the ninth to knot the score.
Hayden Priest delivered the big blow with a three-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth off Pitt State's Andrew Wisner.
After the Gorillas failed to plate a run in the top of the 10th, Jett Buck beat out an infield single off Pitt State's Cadyn Castellanos (2-1) and Cash Jay delivered a walk-off double to cap the Ichabods rally.
Nixon Brannan homered twice and drove in four runs to pace the Pitt State offense. Jeff Grauberger also smacked a pair of solo home runs. The Gorillas hit five solo HRs in the top of the second inning, including four straight round trippers.
Pitt State starter Brady Pacha limited WU to one run and six hits through 5.0 effective innings of work. He registered six strikeouts.
