PITTSBURG -- The Pittsburg State University softball team made a strong home debut Wednesday (Feb. 28) sweeping a doubleheader from Delta State University at the PSU Softball Complex. The Gorillas defeated the Lady Statesmen, 9-4 and 10-7.
In game one, Pitt State broke open a 4-3 game with three runs in the fourth inning and the Gorillas tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the sixth for an eventual 9-4 victory.
Heather Arnett smacked an inside the park home run and doubled while going 4-for-4 at the plate to spark the Pitt State offense. Arnett and Paxtyn Hayes each drove in a pair of runs in the contest Hannah Martin (3-0) allowed just one run in 3.2 innings of relief work to earn the victory in the circle. She scattered three hits and fanned five batters.Â
In the nightcap, Hayes, Sydney Sneed and Sophia Driver each smacked home runs to power Pitt State's 15-hit attack. Hayes finished the game 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI. Arnett, Hannah Burnett and Sneed all had two hits in the game. Kiana Pogroszewski (6-1) recorded her sixth win of the season. Martin got the final out for her first save.
The Gorillas improved to 16-2 on the season with the sweep, while Delta State slipped to 2-16 overall.
