Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Gorillas Win Nail Biter Over Jennies

PITTSBURG — Harper Schreiner hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 2:21 to play in regulation and the Pittsburg State University women's basketball team held off the University of Central Missouri down the stretch for an 82-80 win Wednesday (Feb. 7).

Schreiner's long-range shot staked the Gorillas to a 79-76 lead. After UCM's Allie Clevenger missed on a potential game-tying 3-pointer, Schreiner pushed the Pitt State lead to five, 81-76, with 1:50 to go.

The Jennies (15-6, 9-6 MIAA) got a layup and two free throws from Brooke Littrell, with a missed shot from Pitt State's Karenna Gerber sandwiched in-between, to whittle the deficit to one point with 46 ticks remaining.

Grace Pyle made one of two free throws with 18 seconds to play for the final 82-80 margin. UCM's Lauren Frost missed a jumper with eight ticks to go, but Karenna Gerber missed two free throws with 3.1 seconds left to leave the door open for the Jennies.

Oliva Nelson missed a guarded runner at the buzzer to allow the Gorillas (17-5, 11-5 MIAA) to escape with the hard fought win.

Macie Mays paced four Pitt State players in double figures with 17 points. Harper Schreiner added 15 points, while Jenna Shipley chipped in with 14 on the strength of 3-for-3 shooting from 3-point range. Pyle also finished with 13 points.

Littrell posted game highs of 26 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Jennies. Nelson and Frost added 15 and 14 points, respectively.

The Gorillas will return to action Saturday (Feb. 10) to host Lincoln University at 1:30 p.m. (CST) at John Lance Arena/Whetzel Court.
