PITTSBURG -- Regis University jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead and rode the early momentum to a 5-4 victory over the Pittsburg State University baseball team Friday (Feb. 9) in the series opener at Al Ortolani Field.
The Rangers (3-1-1) never trailed in the contest and held off the Gorillas (3-2) in the ninth to preserve the one-run game.
Pitt State plated a pair of runs in the ninth on a pair of RBI grounders by Josh Holmes and Austin Warkins but Rangers reliever Ethan Sloan fanned Dylan Kurahashi-Choo Foy with a runner on third base to end the game.
Karson Coffee drove in a pair of runs for the Gorillas, who were limited to five hits in the contest. Starter Brady Pacha (0-2) took the loss. He allowed three runs on six hits in 4.0 innings of work.
The two squads will return to action with a Noon (CST) doubleheader Saturday.
