PITTSBURG -- The No. 9 ranked Missouri Southern State University baseball team plated five runs in the pivotal fourth inning to claim a 6-1 victory over Pittsburg State University in the MIAA series opener between the schools Friday (Mar. 15) at Al Ortolani Field.
The Lions (21-4, 9-1 MIAA) posted their eighth straight victory in the contest, while snapping a seven-game winning streak by the Gorillas (17-6, 8-3 MIAA) in the process. The two teams will resume the series with a 2 p.m. (CDT) contest Saturday (Mar. 16).
Cole Gayman remained undefeated on the season with a solid outing on the mound for MSSU. Gayman (6-0) threw seven scoreless innings before surrendering a pinch hit solo home run to Pitt State's Jake Grauberger in the bottom of the eighth. Gayman scattered four hits and fanned 10 batters.
Tanner Leslie (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season for the Gorillas. Relievers Chase Terrell, Parker Weddle, Ryker Curry and Zach Curry pitched 5.1 innings of two-hit relief to hold the Lions at bay in the latter innings.
