PITTSBURG -- Nixon Brannan's bloop single scored Blake Mozley with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Pittsburg State University baseball team rallied for a 5-4 victory over Missouri Southern State University Saturday (Mar. 16) at Al Ortolani Field.
The No. 9 ranked Lions (22-5, 10-2 MIAA) took a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth inning when Nate Mieszkowski delivered a two-out, three-run double to erase a 3-1 deficit. The Gorillas (18-6, 9-3 MIAA) tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the frame on Mozley's RBI triple that knocked in Joe Hamilton.
Cadyn Castellanos (4-1) limited MSSU to one hit in 3.0 innings of relief work to pick up his fourth win of the season. Starter Alex Kafka pitched 5.0 innings, allowing four runs on six hits in the contest. Cole Askew worked a scoreless ninth inning for his third save of the season.
Dylan Kurahashi-Choy Foo and Austin Warkins each belted fist inning home runs as the Gorillas jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the contest.
Pitt State and MSSU, which saw its eight-game winning streak halted in the loss Saturday, will wrap the three-game MIAA series with a Noon (CDT) contest Sunday (Mar. 17).
