Gorillas Finish Off MIAA/NSIC Conference Challenge With Sweep Over CSP

PITTSBURG - The 13th ranked Pittsburg State softball team picked up its 30th win of the season and extended the winning streak to 20 after sweeping Concordia - St. Paul (10-4, 3-2) on Sunday (Mar. 17) at the PSU Softball Complex.

The Gorillas (30-2) jumped out to a six-run lead in the first inning with Heather Arnett (Pittsburg, Kan.) stealing three of her record setting five bags in the first frame of the first game. Arnett was joined by Paxtyn Hayes (Greenwood, Ark.) and Amaya Snyder (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) with three hits to tie for the team lead. Ava Laurent (Grand Island, Neb.) struck out three in 2.2 innings of work with Hannah Martin (Moore, Okla.) picking up her sixth win of the season after 4.1 innings of work and six strikeouts in relief.

In game two against the Golden Bears (18-6), Pitt State scored in the third inning before a two run sixth by CSP gave them the lead for the first time during the doubleheader. Maddie Fernandez (San Antonio, Texas) began the bottom of the sixth inning off with a double down the left field line before a Kadyn Trochim (Waco, Texas) triple down the right field line scored a pinch running Gabby Schultz (Gardner, Kan.), Sydney Sneed (Bentonville, Ark.) scored Trochim with a pinch hit sacrifice fly to give the Gorillas the 3-2 lead and ultimately the win. Kiana Pogroszewski (Ephraim, Utah) went the distance for her eighth win of the season, striking out six and issuing out only one walk.

Up next for Pittsburg State is the resumption of MIAA play against Northeastern State (Mar. 22) and Rogers State (Mar. 23) on the road.
