TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - The 11th ranked Pittsburg State University softball team swept Northeastern State University (13-2, 11-2) at RiverHawks Park on Friday (Mar. 22) extending the Division II leading and program record winning streak to 22.
Pittsburg State (32-2, 6-0 MIAA) scored three runs in the second and eight in the third inning en route to a 13-2 five inning run rule victory in game one. Paxtyn Hayes (Greenwood, Ark.), Maddie Fernandez (San Antonio, Texas) and Ava Sarwinski (Grove, Okla.) led the team with three RBI in the game as Fernandez and Sarwinski hit home runs. Ava Laurent (Grand Island, Neb.) picked up her 10th win of the season striking out seven in five innings.
In game two the Gorillas scored six in the fourth inning before adding two in the fifth and three in the sixth for the 11-2 six inning run rule win over Northeastern State (5-20, 0-8 MIAA). Hays finished with three RBI, collecting her 36th career home run to tie Kylie Guthier (2014-17) and Kala Holder (2017-19) for fourth in program history. Kiana Pogroszewski (Ephraim, Utah) picked up her ninth win of the season after five innings of work as Chelsea Beville (Seneca, Mo.) pitched the last inning and struck out one.
