PITTSBURG -- Graduate transfer right-handed pitcher Alex Kafka tossed seven shutout innings and Pittsburg State University batters swatted four home runs en route to a 10-0 run-rule victory over Northwest Missouri State University Saturday (Mar. 2) at Al Ortolani Field.
The Gorillas (12-5, 3-2 MIAA) staked Kafka to a 3-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a pair of wind-aided hits that extended the frame. Pitt State took a 4-0 lead to the seventh before things unraveled for NWMSU 98-9, 1-4 MIAA). Daegan Brady, Austin Warkins and Nixon Brannan all homered in the six-run frame to halt the game early. Brannan's two-run shot off reliever Connor Polli proved to be the final blow.
Dylan Kurahashi-Choy Foo also belted a solo home run in the third inning. Choy Foo finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, the home run and two RBI. Warkins also collected three hits, while Brady and Joe Hamilton each tallied a pair of hits.
Kafka (2-1), a Pittsburg High School, scattered six singles in the contest. He walked none and fanned four batters.
The Gorillas and Bearcats will close out the three-game MIAA series with a Noon (CST) contest Sunday.
