CLAREMORE, Okla. -- The Pittsburg State University softball team saw its school record winning streak end Saturday (Mar. 23) but not without a fight by the No. 11 ranked Gorillas against No. 3 Rogers State University.
The Hillcats topped the Gorillas, 2-1, in the first game of Saturday's MIAA twinbill; and RSU needed to rally in the late innings for a 5-4 victory over Pitt State. The losses halt the Gorillas 22-game winning streak. Pitt State is now 32-4 overall and 6-2 in MIAA play.
In game one, the Hillcats (26-4, 10-0 MIAA) scored their only runs of the game from a two-run home run in the second inning as RSU's Sarah Llamas-Howell (13-2) and Pitt State's Ava Laurent (10-1) engaged in a pitcher's duel. The Gorillas lone run came when Kendall Forbes scored on Kadyn Trochim's RBI grounder in the top of the seventh inning.
In game two, RSU's Callie Yellin delivered a walk-off home run with one out in the seventh inning to seal the victory for the Hillcats. Pitt State led 4-3 on Sophia Driver's fifth inning double. Paxtyn Hayes also swatted a two-run home run in the fourth inning for the Gorillas.
Pitt State will return home to entertain Nebraska-Kearney and Fort Hays State University in MIAA doubleheaders next Friday and Saturday (Mar. 29-30).
