PITTSBURG - The Pittsburg State University baseball team jumped out to a 9-0 lead after four innings against Emporia State University on Tuesday (Mar. 26) paving the way to a 13-6 victory in midweek conference action at Al Ortolani Field.
The Gorillas (21-9, 12-5 MIAA) began the scoring in the first inning off a two-run home run by Nixon Brannan before pouring in five more runs in the second, including an Austin Warkins three-run home run and in the fourth, a solo home run by Josh Holmes highlighting a two-run inning. Emporia State (15-17, 6-11 MIAA) scored runs in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings to make it interesting, but Pitt State claimed the midweek series against the Hornets with a 13-6 victory.
Dylan Kurahasi Choy-Foo led the team with four runs scored going 2-of-3 from the plate for an RBI and three walks. Brannan went 4-of-6 with three RBI and three runs scored while finishing a triple short of the cycle. Warkins went 1-of-3 for four RBI and Holmes was 2-of-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.Â
Cadyn Castellanos picked up his fifth win of the season with 3.0 innings of relief, striking out two and limiting the Hornets offense to two hits. Gage Singer started the game going two full innings, giving up one hit and striking out two.
Pitt State will return to action Thursday (Mar. 28) against Northeastern State University to begin a three game conference series in Tahlequah, Okla., first pitch at Rousey Field is set for 5:00 p.m. (CT).
