PITTSBURG -- Austin Warkins scored from third base on a wild pitch with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to help lift the Pittsburg State University baseball team to a 6-5 victory and a three-game series sweep of Missouri Western State University Sunday (Apr. 14) at Al Ortolani Field.
Warkins reached base on a one-out throwing error, advanced to second on Hayden Dyer's walk and moved to third when Griffons reliever Sam Kratz (3-3) hit Daegan Brady to load the bases. Kratz's next pitch to Cade Clemons went to the backstop allowing Warkins to scoot home with the winning run.
Pitt State (27-14, 17-10 MIAA) led 4-0 early in the game but MWSU (18-22, 9-18 MIAA) tied it up at 4-4 with two runs apiece in the fifth and sixth frames.
Dyer went 3-for-4 with two runs scored in the contest, finishing a home run shot of hitting for the cycle. Clemons smacked a three-run home run in the bottom of the second inning to stake the Gorillas to a 3-0 lead. Blake Mozley also went 2-for-3 at the plate to continue his hot hitting week.
Boston Dowd (4-1) got the final out of the top of the ninth inning to earn the win. He entered the game with the bases loaded but got MWSU's Jared Munk to fly out to right fielder Jake Grauberger on a liner to right center field. Starter Brady Pacha allowed four earned runs in 6.0 innings pitched. He issued one walk and fanned seven batters.
