EDMOND, Okla. - The fourth ranked Pittsburg State University softball team picked up two wins Friday (May 3) to advance to the MIAA Tournament Championship game at Gerry Pinkston Stadium.
Pittsburg State (51-5) beat Fort Hays State (27-25), 7-0 and No. 9 University of Central Oklahoma (43-12), 4-1 to make their fifth ever appearance in the MIAA Tournament Championship game and first since 1995.
In game one, Courtney Storey (Rogers, Ark.) led the team offensively with three RBI, going 2-of-3 with her first home run of the season. Hannah Burnett (Independence, Kan.) finished 2-of-3 with a triple and two RBI. Heather Arnett (Pittsburg, Kan.) went 3-of-4 with three runs scored and two stolen bases. Ava Laurent (Grand Island, Neb.) picked up her 19th win of the season in the circle striking out four in six shutout innings, as Hannah Martin (Moore, Okla.) completed the shutout performance with a lineout, flyout and strikeout looking in the seventh inning.
In game two against the Bronchos, both teams got a run in the first inning from early lineup hits to tie it up, 1-1. A Maddie Fernandez (San Antonio, Texas) RBI double in the third and an Arnett two RBI single up the middle provided the 4-1 final score as the Gorillas beat the Bronchos for the third time this season. Kiana Pogroszewski picked up her 18th win of the season with three strikeouts while keeping the Broncos from scoring or putting a runner on third base in the final six innings. Arnett led the team with two RBI going 2-of-4 with a run scored as Fernandez, Paxtyn Hayes (Greenwood, Ark.) and Gabby Schultz (Gardner, Kan.) each finished with a double and either provided an RBI or scored themselves.
Saturday (May 4), the Gorillas and Hillcats of Rogers State University will play for the MIAA Tournament championship at Noon from Gerry Pinkston Stadium.
