CONROE, Texas -- The Pittsburg State University softball team split its opening games of the season at the DII First Pitch Invitational at the Scrap Yard Sports Complex on Friday (Jan. 31).
The Gorillas (1-1) dropped the opening game of the day 5-0 against No. 11 Angelo State (2-0) before turning in a dominant 8-2 win over St. Edward's (1-1) to end the day.Â
Against ASU,
Heather Arnett (Pittsburg, Kan.),
Courtney Storey (Rogers, Ark.) and
Ava Sarwinski (Grove, Okla.) led the team with two hits each.
Ava Laurent (Grand Island, Neb.) picked up the loss but struck out eight in 5.2 innings,
Chelsea Beville (Seneca, Mo.) pitched the final 1.1 innings and struck out three Rambelles.
In the nightcap Pittsburg State used a five-run second and three run fourth to gain an 8-0 advantage over the Hilltoppers. SEU responded with a pair of runs in the fifth to stave off a run-rule but didn't add any more runs in the game.
Kendall Forbes (Wichita, Kan.) led the team with three hits and finished with two runs scored.
Alleyna Rushing (Bentonville, Ark.) was joined by Storey and Arnett with two RBI in the contest.
Aydenne Brown (Edmonton, Canada) picked up the win with four shutout innings, striking out six with the freshmen duo of
Jadyn Standeford (Oologah, Okla) and
Lexi Franklin (Booneville, Ark.) pitching the final three innings.
Tomorrow the Gorillas will play St. Mary's (Texas) at 1:30 p.m. (CST) and Texas Woman's at 6:30 p.m.
