Gorillas Celebrate Senior Day With Gritty 1-0 Win Over No. 23 Northwest Missouri

PITTSBURG - The Pittsburg State University women's soccer team picked up a key conference win on Senior Day at the Gorilla Soccer Pitch on Sunday (Oct. 26), claiming a 1-0 victory over No. 23 Northwest Missouri.

Before the match began, the Gorillas honored their four seniors, Andrea Castellanos, Adriana Delgado, Abby Williams and Sailor Jensen.

The win by Pittsburg State (11-2-2, 6-1-2 MIAA) is the first in program history over a team ranked in the USC (United Soccer Coaches) Top-25 poll.

With the conclusion of every match this weekend, the Bearcats (10-4, 7-2 MIAA) drop from first to tied for second in the MIAA standings with 21 points, while the Gorillas are now fourth in the league standings with 20 points.

In the first half, both teams had chances to get on the board throughout the first 45 minutes of action, with PSU firing off six shots and NWMSU responding with three of their own, but none found the back of the net. The second half would see a change in momentum with the Gorillas getting the game winner from a Carrie Cunningham left footed shot just outside the 18-yard box, finding the bottom right corner of the net, beating a diving Lily Ellis in goal in the 68th minute. Abby Hoffman picked up her team-high four assist of the season on the goal with Cunningham forming a quartet with Ella Cazzavillan, Danae Hobson and Jensen atop the team leaderboards with four goals on the season.

Jocelyn Kramar picked up her eighth shutout of the season, moving her into a four-way tie for most shutouts by a goalkeeper in the MIAA this season. Cazzavillan finished with a match-high four shots and was joined by Mia Hunt, Cunningham and Ryann Caruth with one shot on goal each.

Up next for the Gorillas will be a pair of road tests, beginning with the University of Central Oklahoma Bronchos on Friday (Oct. 31). Kickoff from Tom Thompson Field is slated for 4:00 p.m. (CT).
